The CIMA Operational Level is the first stage of the CIMA Professional Qualification. It focuses on developing the core technical accounting knowledge and practical finance skills required to work effectively in accounting and finance roles within organisations. At this level, you learn how to prepare financial statements, manage costs, and understand how business operations function in real life. On completion, you will earn the CIMA Diploma in Management Accounting (Dip MA) and progress to the CIMA Management Level.

Course Overview
The Operational Level teaches you how accounting works in practice inside a business. You will gain the ability to:

  • Record, process, and report financial transactions
  • Apply management accounting techniques to control costs and improve performance
  • Understand how business functions operate and support organisational strategy
  • Apply your knowledge in a real-world business scenario through the OCS exam

This level bridges the gap between basic accounting knowledge and professional finance practice.

  • Have completed the CIMA Certificate in Business Accounting, or
  • Hold AAT Level 4, a relevant degree, or exemptions from CIMA, or

Units and topics covered!

The CIMA Operational Level course includes three following core units and one case study:

  • Role of the finance function
  • Technology in a digital world
  • Data and information in a digital world
  • Shape and structure of the finance function
  • Finance interacting with the organisation
  • Cost accounting for decisions and control
  • Budgeting and budgetary control
  • Short term commercial decision making
  • Risk and uncertainty in the short term
  • Regulatory environment of financial reporting
  • Financial statements 
  • Principles of taxation
  • Managing cash and working capital

The case study is designed to bring together the knowledge learnt at the objective test levels. The case study exam is tested using core syllabus areas designed to reflect the deaily tasks expected of a finance professional at the relevant exam level.

The CIMA Operational Level course and each of its above-mentioned units are assessed in computer-based exams(CBEs). The first three units: E1, P1 and F1 are on-demand, meaning you can take it whenever you are ready. Each on-demand CBE is 90 minutes. However, the case study is conducted across four windows: February, May, August, and November.
